About Us

Huairen Kiln is a folk kiln with a thousand-year history in northern China, which began firing during the Liao and Jin dynasties, characterized by black glazed porcelain. The kiln was distributed along valleys such as the Dayu River and Xiaoyu River, utilizing local kaolin and loess glaze resources to form a unique craft system. Physical evidence such as the Jin Dynasty's black glazed oil drop cup and the Yuan Dynasty's black glazed chicken leg bottle attests to its technical achievements [1] [3]. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it gradually declined due to changes in regional political status, but the kiln fire was not extinguished. Existing sites such as Xiaoyu, Zhangwa Gou, and Wujia Kiln bear witness to its historical context [3] [6]. The modern city of Huairen has inherited traditional porcelain-making skills and has developed into one of the largest daily-use porcelain production bases in the country. In 2022, it was selected as one of the first batch of provincial characteristic towns in Shanxi Province.

Firing and Glaze Characteristics: Utilizing kaolin (with a refractory temperature of up to 1730°C) associated with the Datong coalfield, the body exhibits a grayish-yellow hue. A uniquely formulated loess glaze is employed, resulting in a finished product that contrasts a glossy black glaze with an iron-rust-colored body [3][6].

Decorative Techniques:

Carved Relief (Retained Design with Ground Cut Away): Patterns are carved through the black glaze layer to expose the light yellow body beneath [3].
Single-Line Incised Decoration: Simple lines are drawn on the unfired clay body using a bamboo stylus [6].
Typical Forms: Chicken-leg bottles, fluted jars, and oil-drop tea bowls. Among them, the Yuan Dynasty maple leaf bottle is housed in the China Ceramic Museum.

  • I. Selection and Care of Bone China a. Cover the cup over a light bulb (or just hold it against light), with strong translucency and soft coloration being considered superior. b. A product that is uniformly milky white, has a smooth glaze, and is thin in porcelain quality is considered high-quality. c. Tap on the cup with a porcelain spoon or lightly bounce it with your fingers; if it rings clear and loud like a great bell, it's of good quality. b. Bone China care: 1. Always wash by hand, not in a dishwasher. If you really don't want to wash by hand, choose a dishwasher with "porcelain and crystal" washing function. 2. Do not place gold-edged utensils in the microwave to avoid corrosion. 3. The pH value during washing must be between 11-11.5. 4. When rinsing with clean water, do not exceed a temperature of 80°C. 5. Do not immerse hot cups directly into cold water to prevent rapid temperature changes from damaging the porcelain. 6. If there are scratches, they can be slightly polished with toothpaste. 7. If there are tea stains, they can be cleaned with lemon juice or vinegar. 8. It is best not to use them for sudden cooling or heating to avoid cracking. 9. Do not burn them directly with open flames. II. Technical Requirements for Bone China Production 1. The whiteness should not be less than 80%. 2. The content of tricalcium phosphate in the porcelain body should not be less than 36%. 3. The water absorption rate should not exceed 0.5%. 4. Thermal stability: does not crack after one heat exchange at 140 degrees Celsius in 20 degree Celsius water. 5. Weight error within 5%. 6. Each product should have no more than four defects, and these defects should not be concentrated.
